Why do we torture ourselves in so many areas of everyday life? Why do we work out to the point of exhaustion & pain? Why do women put up with men who abuse them (& men put up with women who abuse them)? Why do workers endure terrible bosses? Why do we subject ourselves to terrible service at the bank & in restaurants? Ross explains why we tolerate these & other situations that cause us pain & suffering & shows how people fall into destructive patterns of behavior that are mutually reinforcing. Using case studies, he uncovers the effects of sadomasochism in our culture. He exposes the deeper psychological roots of these rituals of self-torture, pointing the reader toward solutions for these self-destructive patterns.

Editorial :

Apparently, to the author, a middle class English person is not allowed to sing about being on the dole in England, but can sing about the USA, South America and the Spanish Civil War. Oxford doesn't publish books for "dummies" -- they publish "very short introductions". The book is also a superb reference to the advanced reader as it reiterates in detail many of the audit program, internal control and evidentiary procedures. Instead of dealing with the trauma of abuse? They allow that trauma to be the reasoning behind their boorish, mean, evil, and downright ILLEGAL behavior towards women.

Not hot. A reason to care about her. Because it has the hand of an individual it a much more pleasant book to read from cover-to-cover.

The physical book is very appealing. Looking forward to Vol 3 which should be just as good as it concentrates on another interesting character who seems to have a tormented past.. McNeill again approaches the `other folks' involved in the Horus
